Double to the Left-Center Gap
The call: Double to the left-center gap: Relay to 3rd through the shortstop.
All nine jobs
Tap a player to follow that one job on the field.
Why it matters
The ball rolls too far for one throw. The shortstop runs out to be the relay, and the second baseman trails behind. Both middle infielders are now in the outfield. That leaves 2nd base empty, unless the first baseman follows the batter there. A long, looping throw to nobody is how a double becomes a triple.
What the runners do
- Batter. Double: cruises into 2nd.

Questions coaches ask
- Who is the relay on a ball in the left-center gap with the bases empty?
- The shortstop. Sprints out toward the center fielder, lines up with 3rd and puts both arms up as a target.
- Who covers 2nd on a ball in the left-center gap with the bases empty?
- The first baseman. Trails the batter-runner to 2nd and covers the bag, since both middle infielders went out.
- Who backs up 3rd on a ball in the left-center gap with the bases empty?
- The pitcher. Sprints to foul territory behind 3rd, in line with the relay throw.
