Why it matters
A single to right is the hit that sends a runner from 1st to 3rd. The throw goes to 3rd through the shortstop, who lines up between the right fielder and the bag. If the throw skips past 3rd, the runner scores unless somebody is behind it. The pitcher backs up in foul ground, and the left fielder comes in behind the bag.
What the runners do
- Runner on 1st. First to third: a single to right means the longest throw to 3rd.
- Batter. Single: rounds 1st and holds when the ball comes back in.
