Why it matters

Shortstop or second baseman: one covers the bag and the other backs up. It has to be settled before the pitch. When both go, or neither, the catcher's throw rolls into center field. The center fielder charges in on every steal for exactly that reason.

What the runners do

  • Runner on 1st. Steals with the pitch, but the catcher's throw beats the runner to 2nd.
  • Batter. Takes the pitch and stays in the box.

This is the baseball field. In the app a fastpitch softball team sees every play on its own field, with its own rules.

Questions coaches ask

Who covers 2nd on a steal of 2nd?
The shortstop. Breaks for 2nd as soon as the runner goes, takes the throw, and makes the tag.
Who backs up 2nd on a steal of 2nd?
The second baseman. Breaks behind 2nd to back up the shortstop in case the throw gets by.
What does the pitcher do on a steal of 2nd?
Ducks down so the catcher's throw can go through to 2nd.
