Ground Ball to the Pitcher, Runner on 1st
The call: Double play: pitcher to shortstop to first baseman.
All nine jobs
Tap a player to follow that one job on the field.
Why it matters
The pitcher has the ball sooner than anyone expects, and the shortstop is often not at 2nd yet. Settle who covers before the pitch, so the pitcher can turn and throw to the bag instead of waiting. The second baseman backs up behind 2nd, because a rushed throw from the mound is the one that sails.
What the runners do
- Runner on 1st (forced). Forced out at 2nd.
- Batter. Out at 1st to complete the double play.
This is the baseball field. In the app a fastpitch softball team sees every play on its own field, with its own rules.
Questions coaches ask
- Who covers 2nd on a ground ball back to the pitcher with a runner on 1st?
- The shortstop. Gets to 2nd to take the feed from the pitcher, then turns and throws to 1st.
- Who backs up 2nd on a ground ball back to the pitcher with a runner on 1st?
- The second baseman. Breaks behind 2nd to back up the shortstop in case the pitcher's throw gets by.
- What does the catcher do on a ground ball back to the pitcher with a runner on 1st?
- Nobody on 2nd or 3rd, so the catcher sprints down the 1st-base line to back up the throw.
