Why it matters
A caught line drive is two outs waiting to happen. A runner who took off has to get back before the ball does. Every infielder goes to a base the moment the ball is caught, because the out needs somebody on the bag. Most teams catch it, celebrate, and never make the throw.
What the runners do
- Runner on 2nd. Took off on contact and can't get back. Doubled off.
- Runner on 1st. Freezes on the line drive and gets back to the bag.
- Batter. Out on the line drive.
