Bunt With Runners on 1st and 2nd
The call: Sacrifice bunt: pitcher to the second baseman covering 1st.
All nine jobs
Tap a player to follow that one job on the field.
Why it matters
With a runner on 2nd the third baseman can't charge, because 3rd base is where that runner is headed. So the pitcher covers the 3rd-base line and fields the bunt. The mistake is the third baseman charging out of habit and leaving the base open.
What the runners do
- Runner on 2nd (forced). Forced to 3rd, moves up on the sacrifice.
- Runner on 1st (forced). Breaks for 2nd once the bunt is down; that's the sacrifice.
- Batter. Out at 1st: gives up an out to move the runners up (a sacrifice).

Questions coaches ask
- Who covers 1st on a bunt down the 3rd-base line with runners on 1st and 2nd?
- The second baseman. Sprints to cover 1st because the first baseman charged in on the bunt.
- Who backs up 1st on a bunt down the 3rd-base line with runners on 1st and 2nd?
- The right fielder. Runs in behind 1st, in line with the throw, in case it gets away.

- Calls out which base to throw to, then stays home.
